2. Highlights
Carving technique: the pot's most distinctive feature is its relief carving (a roughened ground). The artisan has scraped away the glossy outer skin to reveal the golden clay body beneath, forming the image of a lotus flower and seed pod in full bloom.
Contrast: the opposition between the gold of the carved motif and the dark brown (liver-coloured) body produces a powerful visual effect, making the lotus appear to glow.
Meaning: the lotus ("Lien Hoa") stands for purity – "it grows from the mud yet carries none of its smell" – bringing a sense of calm to the drinking of tea.
