One of the celebrated "Four Great Potteries", made from a distinctive blend of red and white clays found along the banks of the Qin River.
Characteristics: Nixing ware is renowned for being as hard and dense as steel, ringing with a clear, metallic note when lightly tapped.
Kiln-transmuted colour: The ware uses no glaze; its deep liver-brown tone arises naturally through flame transmutation in the kiln at temperatures above 1000°C. The longer the pot is used and seasoned, the smoother and more lustrous its surface becomes.
The piece is made entirely by hand by artisan Zeng Shijun.
Every line, from handle and spout to lid, is finished to an exceptionally high standard, showing masterful carving and modelling technique. The artisan's authenticating seal is impressed on the base of the pot.
A classic shape built on a trapezoidal profile: a broad base tapering towards the lid, giving it absolute stability and balance.
The wide base gives the leaves ample room to open fully, drawing out the tea's finest flavour and aroma in full.
Technique: The motif is incised directly into the body by hand, then optionally treated with mineral pigment to bring out the lines.
Meaning: The open lotus bloom paired with bud and leaf stands for nobility and purity, and carries the wish "continuous peace, unbroken good fortune". It is a motif steeped in meditative calm and ease.
This is a large capacity (group brewing), ideally suited to tea sessions for 4 to 6 people.
Well suited to entertaining guests, and to use in spacious tea rooms or the office.
The filter holes are drilled by hand, carefully and evenly.
Advantages: Excellent at holding back leaf debris, with a strong, smooth flow that never clogs, making pouring decisive and a pleasure to watch.
Thanks to its steady heat retention and a ceramic body that does not distort flavour, the pot is particularly suited to: pu-erh, black tea (hong cha), oolong and old-tree Shan Tuyet teas.
