2. The meaning of the plain form & outstanding features
-
The minimalist beauty of a plain unadorned surface: With no elaborate carved patterns, the plain body honours in full the shaping and throwing skill of artisan Hu Dongli and the naturally shifting colours (kiln transmutation) of Nixing ceramic after firing. The plain form brings a rustic, still and serene feeling to the tea-drinking space.
-
Qinzhou Nixing clay: The body blends loam from the west bank with mineral silt from the east bank of the Qinjiang River. High-temperature firing produces a ceramic as hard and dense as metal, with a smooth unglazed surface and evenly distributed pores that give outstanding heat retention and aroma holding. The plain surface means wiping and seasoning the pot (building the patina) goes quickly, to a jade-like gloss.
-
Balance and fit: The centre of gravity is even, the handle sits comfortably in the hand, and the lid is machined precisely for a tight seal that holds heat deep.
-
14-hole filter: The filter holes are evenly spaced for fast drainage, a round and smooth pour, a clean cut-off and effective resistance to clogging by leaves.
3. Which teas it suits & instructions for use
-
Which teas brew well in this pot:
-
The 175ml capacity is just right for tea sessions for two or a small group of tea friends; it holds heat steadily, softens the water and brings out the sweet aftertaste.
-
Suitable for brewing: Pu'er tea (sheng pu'er, shu pu'er), oolong tea (high-mountain oolong, Tieguanyin, ginseng oolong), Wuyi rock tea, red tea and old-tree white tea.
-
-
Opening the pot: Rinse the pot clean with warm water, simmer it gently together with the tea you will dedicate it to for 15 – 20 minutes, then let it cool naturally.
-
Seasoning the pot: After each use simply rinse it clean with boiling water, inside and out, and dry it with a soft cloth; never use detergent.
