On the tea table, some teapots are born to be admired, but others are born to become the "soulmate" you live with every day. This Nixing teapot by artisan Hu Tan Hoa is exactly such a companion: Steady, Gentle and Full of meaning.
The painted side: The artisan has carved a Lotus Flower stretching upward in full bloom. The carving is slender and refined, using an incised technique that stands out against the dark ceramic ground. The lotus is a symbol of purity — "it grows in the mud yet carries none of the mud's smell" — and looking at it lifts a weight from the heart.
The inscribed side: The two Chinese characters "Hương Liên" (香蓮) (Lotus Fragrance) are written with a soaring hand.
The meaning beyond the words: Drinking tea from this pot, you sense a faint lotus scent somewhere nearby before you have even taken a sip. That is the "Fragrance" of the tea blending with the "Feeling" of the clay.
Capacity 270ml: This is the ideal size for group brewing (a tea table of 3-5 people).
Use: The pot is large enough that a long conversation is never interrupted by constant refilling. It suits teas that need high temperatures, such as ripe pu-erh, black tea or oolong.
Nixing ware from Qinzhou: The clay body is silky smooth and grows richer in colour the more it is used (it develops a glossy patina).
14-hole filter:
The honeycomb filter lets the water run out fast, in a round, powerful stream.
It puts an end to the spout clogging when you brew broken-leaf tea.
Fit and finish: The lid seats tightly, the pour cuts off cleanly, and the tea table stays dry.
The Liên Hương teapot, 270ml – a touch of understated "Zen", a good deal of solid function. A wonderful gift for anyone who loves what is plain and sincere.
