2. Meaning of the motif & what stands out
-
Meaning of the Bamboo and Rabbit motif:
-
The bamboo: A symbol of the lofty, steadfast and upright character of the gentleman, and at the same time a wish for peace ("bamboo heralds peace").
-
The rabbit figure: Stands for intelligence, gentleness, longevity and abundance. A rabbit at its ease beside a stand of bamboo makes a calm, restful scene that brings prosperity and good fortune to the household.
-
-
Qinzhou Nixing clay: The body blends loam from the west bank with mineral silt from the east bank of the Qinjiang River, fired high so the ceramic is dense as jade and rings like a bell, breathes well, holds heat deeply, and grows glossier and smoother in colour the longer it is seasoned.
-
Quality of the handwork: Every line of the bamboo stems, the leaf canopy and the rabbit is carved by artisan Hu Dongli in meticulous, lively detail; the pot is balanced in form, solid in the hand, and the tight-fitting lid keeps in all the heat and aroma.
-
14-hole honeycomb filter: The holes are evenly spaced and free-flowing, so the pour is round and smooth, the stream gathers accurately and the water cuts off cleanly.
3. Which teas it suits & how to use it
-
Which teas brew well in it:
-
The roomy 225ml volume and the lasting heat retention of Nixing ceramic let the leaves open fully, giving a thick liquor with a deep sweet finish.
-
Suited to: pu-erh tea (shu pu-erh, sheng pu-erh), Wuyi rock tea (Da Hong Pao, Shui Xian, Rou Gui), oolong tea (high-mountain oolong, Tie Guan Yin), red tea and old-tree white tea.
-
-
Breaking in the pot: Rinse it clean with warm water, simmer it gently for 15 – 20 minutes together with the tea you plan to brew, then lift it out and let it cool naturally.
-
Caring for the pot: After use, rinse it with boiling water inside and out, dry it with a soft cloth, and never use detergent.
