A gaiwan of refined, understated beauty, made captivating by a distinctive glazing technique. We are pleased to present this masterpiece: the Relief Peony Porcelain Gaiwan, 140ml.
Relief technique: What sets this gaiwan apart is that the motif is not flat at all. The artisan has raised peony blossoms in blue against the white porcelain ground. Run your fingers over it and you feel the texture and life of every petal – a striking 3D effect.
Colour: The classic pairing of white (the porcelain body) and blue (the painted decoration) gives an impression of cleanliness, purity and real elegance.
Meaning: The peony is a symbol of nobility, prosperity and perfect beauty.
At 140ml, this is the most versatile size, suited both to drinking alone (when you want a generous cup) and to drinking in company (3–4 people).
The size sits comfortably in most Vietnamese hands – not so large that it tires the hand, nor too small.
The gaiwan has been called the "universal" brewing vessel. Here is why you should own one:
A flavour "scanner": High-fired porcelain has an inert surface that holds no odours and retains no trace of previous infusions. A gaiwan therefore reflects the flavour and aroma of the tea you are brewing 100% faithfully. It is the best vessel there is for tasting tea (cupping).
Temperature control: The wide mouth releases heat quickly, which makes it ideal for teas that need "fresh" water at a moderate temperature – green tea (Thái Nguyên), white tea, green oolong. The tea will never turn harsh or stewed the way it can when steeped in a thick-walled teapot.
Flexible handling: You can adjust the gap under the lid to make the stream pour out faster or slower, just as you like. Clearing out the spent leaf afterwards is extremely quick too – a light flick and it is clean.
