Unlike ordinary white porcelain, ash glaze produces a warm, muted, natural ground with real depth. The glazed surface is glossy yet mellow rather than glaring, giving the piece an antique, understated feel. This glaze brings out the true colour of the tea liquor as it is poured in.
A rim that flares wide and tapers down to the foot is a classic cup shape in the tea ceremony. The conical form spreads the tea's aroma across a broad surface so the drinker can take it in easily, and it also lets the liquor cool to drinking temperature faster. The gently flared rim feels soft against the lips.
The highlight of this piece is the decoration, painted entirely by hand by an artisan. The brushwork is natural and free, varying in depth of tone, which makes every cup one of a kind and avoids the uniformity of industrial printing.
At 85ml, this cup is fairly large compared with a standard tea cup (30-50ml). The size suits drinkers who prefer to drink deeply, or who want a generous serving of tea in a single raising of the cup.
