On the smooth brown clay body characteristic of this ware, the artisan has carved a lotus in bloom together with a dragonfly in flight. It is an image that stands for the peace of the countryside, bringing a sense of calm to whoever drinks the tea. The lotus symbolises purity and nobility, while the dragonfly evokes lightness and freedom.
The piece is made from the celebrated Nixing clay, fired at high temperature to give a dense, hard body with a naturally smooth, lustrous surface. Nixing ceramic has the advantage of gaining a richer patina the more it is used, it does not accumulate tea stains, it is easy to clean, and it softens the water of the tea.
At 75ml, this cup suits the drinking of many different kinds of tea. The size sits comfortably in the hand, and the thickness of the cup wall is judged so that the tea keeps the heat it needs without making the cup too hot to hold.
