In the art of tea brewing, the pitcher (fairness cup) plays the role of the "fair arbiter", blending the tea liquor so that the first cup and the last are equally full-bodied. This hand-painted porcelain pitcher not only performs that function well, it is also a work of art worth admiring.
Artistry: The motif on the body of the pitcher is entirely hand-painted. The artisan has recreated a charming natural scene of a bamboo clump, a rock and flowing lines of calligraphy.
Style: The brushwork uses indigo/blue-black tones on a white porcelain ground, firmly in the classical ink-wash painting style. The rim and the handle are lined in bronze-brown, giving an elegant antique feel.
260ml capacity: A fairly large size (11.6 * 8.3 cm).
Suitable for holding the liquor from larger teapots (200ml - 250ml) or for combining two infusions from a small pot.
Enough to serve a tea table of 4-6 people.
Pitcher form:
Handle: A squared, sturdy handle design that grips very securely and insulates well against heat.
Spout: A short spout with a wide mouth gives a smooth pour and a clean cut-off, so no tea drips onto the table.
Evens out the flavour: Mixes the tea liquor thoroughly, avoiding the "weak first cup, strong last cup" problem.
Cools the liquor: Brings the tea down to a comfortable drinking temperature (around 50-60 degrees C) so it does not scald the mouth.
Settles the sediment: Lets any fine tea particles settle to the bottom of the pitcher before pouring into the serving cups.
Shows the liquor colour: The white porcelain ground lets the drinker see the true colour of the tea liquor most clearly.
